Ten More Victims Die From Tanker Explosion in Niger State

Ten more victims of the Dikko junction tanker explosion in Niger State have died, with survivors receiving free care under Governor's directive.

Ten more victims severely burned in the tanker explosion along Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State have died. Seven succumbed to their injuries at the General Hospital, Suleja, while three others passed away at the General Hospital, Sabon-Wuse.

The Special Adviser to the Niger State Governor on Digital Communications, Abdulberqy Ebbo, shared the update on social media.

At the General Hospital, Suleja:

  • Admissions: 43 patients
  • Deaths: 7
  • Discharged: 3 patients recovering at home
  • Referred: 10 patients transferred to specialist care in Abuja
  • Ongoing Treatments: 23 patients with varying degrees of burns

At the General Hospital, Sabon-Wuse:

  • Admissions: 23 patients
  • Deaths: 3
  • Discharged Against Medical Advice: 19 patients
  • Critical Case: 1 patient awaiting evacuation to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, Abuja

Government’s Emergency Response

An 18-member multi-disciplinary medical team, led by key officials, including Dr. Tukur Bello (Commissioner of Secondary and Tertiary Healthcare), Dr. Shehu Ahmed (Special Adviser on Health), and Dr. Murtala Bagana (Special Adviser on Special Duties), was deployed to assess and provide urgent medical care.

Recognizing the critical conditions of several victims, the team recommended intensive care for some, leading to referrals to tertiary healthcare facilities in Abuja.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has directed that:

  • Free medical services be provided to all victims.
  • Adequate health workers be deployed to ensure comprehensive care across treatment sites.

The tragedy underscores the need for heightened safety measures and emergency preparedness along Nigeria’s highways. As the victims fight for recovery, the state government’s proactive measures aim to mitigate the devastating impact of this incident.
