The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has cautioned that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies may be his biggest challenge if he seeks reelection in 2027. Gabam criticized several key policy decisions, including the removal of petrol subsidies, forex unification, electricity tariff hikes, and telecommunications tariff increases. Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Gabam argued that these policies have led to economic hardship, making Tinubu’s reelection prospects uncertain. He advised the president to review his policies and restructure his cabinet if he hopes to secure a lasting legacy.
The SDP chairman drew parallels between Tinubu’s presidency and former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure, recalling that protests against Jonathan’s administration began two years into his term and ultimately contributed to his downfall. He warned that mass demonstrations against Tinubu’s government could have similar consequences, stating that even significant financial backing might not be enough to guarantee reelection.
Opposition Politics and Allegations of Bribery
Gabam also criticized the Tinubu administration for stifling opposition voices and suggested that the government amend the constitution if it prefers a one-party system. He accused state governors and ruling party officials of dismissing political dissent, branding those who offer advice as enemies of the government.
Regarding recent allegations by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who claimed that the APC bribed opposition parties with N50 million to weaken their leadership, Gabam strongly denied any involvement. He insisted that the SDP has not received funds from the ruling party and emphasized that his party remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions rather than compromising them. He reiterated that any attempt to suppress opposition would only undermine Nigeria’s democracy further.
As Tinubu navigates the political and economic landscape leading up to 2027, criticisms from opposition leaders like Gabam signal growing dissatisfaction with his policies. Whether the president will heed these warnings and adjust course remains to be seen.
