President Bola Tinubu, alongside dignitaries, commemorates Nigeria's Independence Day with a grand parade, cultural display, and military drills
Independence Day Parade

Breaking news: On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with other dignitaries, attended the 2024 Independence Day Parade at the forecourt of Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. The event, themed ‘Reflecting on the Past, Inspiring the Future,’ marked Tinubu’s second observance as President. He was accompanied by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and inspected the Guard of Honour, led by Lieutenant Colonel Moshood Yusuf, before watching various military drills and cultural displays from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

The Independence Day celebration also featured the traditional presidential change of guards, combined armed forces colour patrol, and a silent drill by the Guard’s Brigade platoon. The cultural segment saw a collaboration of Nigeria’s regions, symbolizing unity with the unveiling of a life-size talking drum—dubbed the “national treasure.”

9am News Nigeria reports that Tinubu cut the anniversary cake, released white pigeons, and signed the anniversary register to mark the event. This year’s low-key celebrations were relocated from Eagle Square to the Villa due to economic challenges. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, noted this shift was reflective of the country’s current state.

Speaking afterwards, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized the collective resolve needed to propel Nigeria forward, echoing President Tinubu’s message of resilience amid challenging times.
