Peter Obi Remains with Julius Abure’s Camp Amid Labour Party Crisis

Labour Party legal adviser confirms Peter Obi's alignment with Julius Abure's leadership amidst ongoing party crisis and court rulings.
Labour Party Crisis

Despite the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP), its legal adviser, Kehinde Edun, has confirmed that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains aligned with the Julius Abure-led faction.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Edun clarified that Obi continues to engage with the Abure camp, reaffirming his support despite attending a September 2024 meeting convened by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State. During that meeting, former Minister of Finance Nenadi Usman was appointed as interim leader until a new party leadership could be elected.

However, the judiciary has since intervened. Both the High Court and the Court of Appeal have ruled in favor of Julius Abure remaining the party’s national chairman.

Addressing Obi’s stance, Edun stated, “He has not made any categorical statement about leaving the party. He speaks with us all the time, and he has not indicated otherwise. He is with us, that is what I know and believe.”

Edun also acknowledged the ongoing disputes within the party, noting, “We are making efforts to reconcile and bring everyone together. We still have time to resolve these issues.”

The Appeal Court recently reinforced Abure’s position as the Labour Party’s National Chairman. Delivering judgment on separate appeals filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and the caretaker committee, Justice Hamma Barka stated that the court’s November 13, 2024, ruling, which recognized Abure’s leadership, remains valid and has not been overturned.

Justice Barka emphasized that the appeals did not address Labour Party leadership as the matter was deemed non-justiciable.

The legal adviser underscored that the Abure camp has refrained from targeting party members in court, stating, “We have never sued any member of the party. Our legal actions were directed at INEC, not individuals.”

As the Labour Party navigates these challenges, the judiciary’s decisions and reconciliation efforts will play a critical role in shaping its future trajectory.
