The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing escalating internal crisis, prompting its elected governors to convene an emergency meeting in Asaba, Delta State, on Friday. The meeting aims to resolve the party’s ongoing leadership crisis and reinforce unity amid deepening factional disputes.
The urgency follows a chaotic Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja, where supporters of embattled National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu clashed with those of former Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye. The altercation led to disruptions and heightened concerns about internal stability.
Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum has attributed the crisis to party leaders who should be uniting rather than dividing members. He assured that a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting would be held in February as planned. The agenda for the Asaba meeting, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, will focus on the urgent need for a NEC meeting, the ongoing leadership dispute between Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye, preparations for upcoming zonal congresses, and a review of the party’s national standing.
Damagum cautioned party members against destabilizing internal processes, warning that political ambition should not come at the cost of party unity. Similarly, BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara expressed disappointment, urging leaders to prioritize the party’s survival over personal interests.
The PDP’s leadership turmoil has been brewing since the 2023 elections, with allegations of interference by key figures, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The divisions have led to public spats between governors and party executives.
Furthermore, The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has mocked the PDP crisis, calling it an “entertaining drama” and suggesting that the opposition party lacks the structure to govern effectively.
