The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified that it cannot confirm when the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members will be implemented. In a press statement issued by the agency’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, in September, it was announced that corps members’ allowances would be increased from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective July 2024, following the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
However, 9am News Nigeria revealed that for September, corps members were still paid the previous ₦33,000, causing confusion among recipients. Speaking on the matter, Caroline Embu explained that the delay is a result of ongoing government processes.
“It is a process. After making the pronouncement, the government has to work on it to be able to pay. It is not automatic,” she said during a telephone conversation. Embu also noted that NYSC has no control over the timing of the implementation, which is dependent on the Federal Government.
As of now, corps members and the public remain in anticipation of when the new allowance will be fully rolled out, alongside the minimum wage adjustments.
