The Northern Governors’ Forum has urged the Federal Government to take immediate action to address the ongoing power blackout across northern states, caused by the vandalism of critical electricity transmission infrastructure. The appeal came on Monday after a meeting held in Kaduna, attended by traditional rulers and key stakeholders.
In a communique released after the meeting, the governors emphasized the pressing need to restore power blackout in northern nigeria and enhance the security of essential infrastructure. “This matter not only underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure but also the need to build additional transmission lines and diversify our energy supply to better connect our region and improve our energy resilience,” they stated.
The vandalism has led to a prolonged blackout, affecting business operations across the region and paralyzing economic activities in various areas. In response, President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to expedite the restoration of power and mandated National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to coordinate with the Army and Air Force to provide security for engineers working on the damaged transmission line.
Expressing his disappointment over the sabotage, Tinubu warned against “deliberate destruction of public utilities.” Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reassured the public of its commitment to restoring power swiftly. TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stated, “TCN is working diligently to restore bulk power supply as quickly as possible despite prevailing security challenges.”
Also, the Northern Governors’ Forum has called for a unified approach in safeguarding the country’s essential infrastructure and supporting energy resilience to prevent future disruptions.
