The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to hold a nationwide protest on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, in response to the 50% hike in telecommunication tariff approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
This decision was made during the ongoing National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting, where the NLC leadership resolved to challenge policies that impose additional economic burdens on Nigerian workers and citizens.
In a statement titled “50% Telecom Tariff Hike: Another Burden Too Harsh!”, NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned the tariff adjustment, calling it an assault on workers’ welfare at a time when the economy is already strained.
“Nigerians are already struggling under extreme economic hardship. The government’s approval of this outrageous tariff hike is not just inconsiderate but an outright attack on workers and the masses,” Ajaero stated.
The protest will be held across major cities, with participation from labour unions, civil society groups, and concerned Nigerians, all of whom are expected to voice their rejection of the tariff increase.
The NLC has urged the federal government to reverse the tariff immediately or face sustained resistance from Nigerian workers.
