The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, following repeated collapses of the national power grid. In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed concerns over the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s electricity sector, describing it as being on the verge of total collapse.

NLC President Ajaero criticized the minister’s recent comments suggesting that grid collapses would persist, framing it as a failure of leadership and competence.

“If the Ministry of Power is manned by competent officials, the now embarrassing constant grid collapse would have been averted instead of the worrying statement by the Minister that this will continue as if this has always been the norm,” Ajaero stated.

He emphasized that under the current administration, the number of grid collapses has exceeded the combined total under all previous leaderships, accusing Adelabu of failing to prioritize critical infrastructure.

Budget Misallocation and Regulatory Failures

The NLC also slammed the Ministry of Power over its proposed allocation of ₦8 billion in the 2025 budget for “sensitization of Nigerians on the need to pay electricity bills.” Ajaero described the allocation as wasteful and out of touch, especially when contractors for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are owed over ₦200 billion.

“Whereas the Minister seeks ₦8 billion to educate us, contractors in the Transmission Company of Nigeria who help in delivering capacity are owed over ₦200 billion,” Ajaero remarked.

He accused the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) of failing to protect consumers and regulate the sector effectively. Ajaero cited an incident in which NERC allegedly supported the dismissal of a distribution company’s managing director for exposing unethical practices, further eroding confidence in the commission’s ability to act impartially.

Calls for Accountability

The NLC president warned against using the budget process as a vehicle for wasteful expenditures and urged the federal government to reinvigorate the electricity sector to avert further deterioration.

“It is unimaginable that NERC, an organization tasked with ensuring transparency and efficiency, would punish a whistleblower instead of rewarding and protecting them,” Ajaero stated, highlighting concerns about a lack of accountability in the sector.

The union reiterated its commitment to monitoring developments in the electricity sector, stressing that incompetence and wastefulness would not go unchallenged.

“Our position is clear: incompetence must not be rewarded, and those responsible must be held accountable. Failure to address these issues will further erode public confidence in governance,” Ajaero concluded.

The NLC’s statement underscores the urgency of addressing systemic failures in Nigeria’s power sector, which remains a critical component of national development and economic stability.
