Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has predicted high-intensity rainfall that could trigger flash floods in coastal cities between May and June 2025. This was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, while presenting the agency’s annual climate prediction for the year in Abuja.
According to the report, rainfall onset will be delayed in parts of Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara, while southern states, including Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, and sections of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi, are expected to experience early rainfall. Other regions are predicted to follow normal patterns.
The end of the rainy season is forecasted to occur earlier than usual in Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo. However, a delayed end is anticipated in Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu.
In terms of temperature, the country is expected to experience generally higher-than-average temperatures throughout most of the year. Daytime and nighttime temperatures will be warmer than usual in January, February, March, and May, while April is projected to be slightly cooler, except in the northern states where temperatures will remain above normal.
Keyamo urged farmers and individuals dependent on rainfall for agriculture to refer to the Seasonal Climate Change document for specific onset dates and consult NIMET for more detailed insights.
