The National Assembly have rescheduled their plenary resumption from Tuesday, January 28, 2025, to Tuesday, February 4, 2025. This adjustment was announced through separate statements from the legislative chambers on Friday, citing ongoing budget defence by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as the primary reason.
Andrew Nwoba, Clerk of the Senate, clarified the rationale for the change, stating, “The resumption date has been rescheduled due to the ongoing budget defence. The new date is Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. prompt, instead of Tuesday, January 28, 2025.”
Akin Rotimi, spokesman for the House of Representatives, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of thorough legislative processes. He noted, “The postponement is necessary to allow committees sufficient time to conclude ongoing budget engagements and defences with MDAs. This action guarantees a careful and all-encompassing commitment to legislative duties.”
The postponement underscores the legislature’s dedication to ensuring meticulous deliberations on the ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget proposal submitted by President Bola Tinubu to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 18, 2024.
Both chambers reiterated their commitment to legislative excellence and urged all stakeholders to cooperate during this crucial phase of the budgetary process. With the new date set, the legislature aims to balance efficient governance with the need for comprehensive fiscal oversight.
