The Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government’s Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to commence work on the Green Line project, a 68-kilometer rail line that will link Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced this in a statement on Tuesday, describing the project as a significant step in the state’s infrastructural development plan.

Omotoso highlighted the Lagos State Government’s progress in road and bridge infrastructure, with 36 completed projects in 2024 and over 51 ongoing projects across the state’s five divisions. Notable completed projects include:

  • Arowojobe Link Bridge and Approach Road in Mende, Maryland.
  • Sand Zero Road in Oyingbo.
  • Platinum Road in Igbokusu.
  • Babafemi Dada Bridge and adjoining roads (Yinka Folarin, Jamiu Lawal, Shalom Academy Road Network).
  • Lekki-Epe Expressway (Phase IIA and Phase IIB).

Other key road upgrades include Eluku Street/Mosafejo in Agbowa Ikosi, Adamo-Akanun-Agunfoye Lugbusi Roads, and Ikeja GRA’s Oduduwa Way, Sasegbon Street, and Oba Dosunmu Road.

Bus Reform Initiative (BRI)

The government is advancing its Bus Reform Initiative, with multiple BRT bus terminals under construction. Projects include:

  • Abule Egba Bus Terminal: Engineering and construction nearing completion.
  • Iyana Ipaja Bus Terminal: Progressing steadily.
  • Ajah Bus Terminals and Depots: Nearing final stages, including the Addo Road Junction Improvement and Pedestrian Bridge.
  • Lagos-Badagry Expressway BRT Infrastructure: The Doyin Orile to Mile 2 section is under active development.

Rail Transportation Milestones

Lagos made history in 2024 with the completion and commissioning of the 27-kilometer Red Line rail, operational since October 15, 2024. The first phase of the rail line serves 500,000 passengers daily, connecting Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos. Key features include:

  • Eight stations (Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, Oyingbo).
  • Integration with major bus terminals.
  • Pedestrian bridges and vehicular overpasses for seamless connectivity.

Omotoso revealed plans to integrate the Red Line with the Blue Line, another ongoing rail project. Work on the second phase of the Blue Line, extending from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is progressing rapidly, promising further enhancements to the state’s transportation network.

The Lagos State Government’s ambitious infrastructure agenda, including the Green Line project, demonstrates its commitment to improving urban mobility, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

These developments reflect Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of a modern, connected, and sustainable Lagos.
