The Labour Party has filed legal actions against lawmakers who defected from the party, urging the National Assembly leadership to declare their seats vacant.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party condemned the defections, particularly that of Hon. Akangbe Illiya, representing Jos South/Jos East in Plateau State. The Labour Party described Illiya’s defection as a betrayal of the trust placed in him by the people and accused him of dishonoring the mandate given to him.

The party is not only requesting the vacant declaration of the defectors’ seats but is also:

  1. Demanding the return of all salaries, emoluments, and privileges received by the lawmakers since their defection.
  2. Insisting that mandates obtained under the Labour Party platform cannot be transferred without due process.

While acknowledging the constitutional right to freedom of association, the party emphasized that this right is limited when it involves mandates secured through a political platform.

“The law does not protect an individual who stole the mandate of a people and a political party to run into another without first surrendering the mandate he deceitfully acquired,” said Ifoh.

The Labour Party has called for strict adherence to democratic principles, warning that defections erode trust in the electoral process and undermine the party’s efforts to foster a just and equitable society.
