In a tragic incident, no fewer than 90 people were confirmed dead following a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The explosion occurred late Tuesday night, October 15, 2024, near Khadija University, after the driver of the tanker lost control of the vehicle.

Shi’isu Adam, the Police Spokesperson in Jigawa, confirmed the devastating news in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. He stated that 50 other individuals suffered varying degrees of injuries and were subsequently hospitalized for treatment.
Adam explained that the accident happened when the tanker, which was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, overturned and exploded. Despite warnings from the police advising people to stay clear of fuel tanker accidents, a crowd gathered at the scene, leading to the high number of casualties.
“People gathered around the accident scene, and that is the reason for the mass casualty,” Adam said.
The victims are set to be given a mass burial at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, while those injured are receiving medical care at Ringim General Hospital.
This tragedy underscores the ongoing danger associated with fuel tanker accidents and the urgent need for public awareness about safety around such incidents.
