The recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has publicly challenged the legitimacy of his removal, calling for adherence to constitutional procedures. Speaking for the first time since his ouster, Obasa denied allegations of corruption leveled against him and expressed his determination to debunk all claims made by the lawmakers.

Addressing supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja, Lagos, Obasa insisted that he remains the legitimate Speaker until due process is followed. “If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it,” he stated.

Dismissing the allegations as baseless, Obasa questioned the feasibility of the financial claims made against him. “Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with N16 billion? It is not the wall of Jericho or the wall that demarcated the United States and Mexico,” he quipped. He further refuted claims of purchasing 40 Hilux vehicles for N40 billion, labeling the allegations as fabrications.

Obasa, the longest-serving lawmaker in the Lagos State Assembly, revealed that over 200 police officers were deployed to his private residence in Agege on the day of his removal, blocking access and restricting his family’s movements. He criticized the lawmakers for orchestrating his impeachment while he was out of the country, emphasizing the importance of preserving the Assembly’s reputation.

Recounting past leadership changes in the House, Obasa contrasted his removal with those of former Speaker Jokotola Pelumi and former Deputy Speaker Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, noting that police intervention was never involved. “We cannot denigrate Lagos State. The Lagos State House of Assembly is above the common standard of excellence,” he said.

Obasa expressed gratitude to his supporters, the Governance Advisory Council, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as a brother. He assured his audience of his innocence, declaring his readiness to address all allegations.

When asked about the possibility of legal action, Obasa hinted at forthcoming developments, stating, “You will know. It’s a matter of time.”

As events unfold, the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa continues to raise questions about the procedures and allegations behind his removal, making it a focal point of political discourse in Lagos State.
