The 17th edition of the prestigious Headies Awards is set to take place on April 5, 2025, marking a return to Nigeria after two consecutive editions outside the country. In a groundbreaking move, organizers have also announced a second edition the 18th Headies scheduled for December 2025.
According to Executive Producer Ayo Animashaun, the decision to hold two editions in a single calendar year stems from the cancellation of the 17th edition initially planned for 2024. “The Headies follows an annual calendar which the Academy intends to maintain, hence the reason for another edition in December,” he explained.
The nomination window for the 17th edition spans from April 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024, while the 18th edition will likely cover the latter half of 2024 and most of 2025.
The organizers have yet to reveal the host and venue for the upcoming edition, but its return to Nigeria signals a significant moment for the local music industry. The 16th edition took place in Atlanta, USA, marking the second consecutive year the awards were held abroad. Animashaun cited planning costs as a key factor behind the temporary relocation.
The announcement of The Headies’ return to Nigeria is expected to excite the music industry, as the award remains one of the most prestigious honors in African entertainment since its inception in 2006.
