A devastating fuel tanker explosion in Niger State, northern Nigeria, has claimed the lives of at least 70 people, with 56 others injured, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday near the Suleja area, following an attempt to transfer gasoline between two tankers using a generator.
The explosion happened when a fuel-laden tanker overturned, spilling its contents. Individuals rushed to scoop up the spilled petrol when the situation turned deadly. A generator used during the transfer process reportedly sparked a fire, causing the tanker to ignite and engulf a nearby tanker in flames.
Kumar Tsukwam, the sector commander for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, confirmed the scale of destruction:
- Over 70 bodies recovered, many burnt beyond recognition.
- 56 individuals injured and receiving medical treatment.
- 15 shops destroyed in the resulting inferno.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, managed to contain the blaze, but the destruction had already taken a severe toll.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and property, describing the explosion as a significant tragedy. “Many people are believed to have perished in this fire caused by the tanker explosion,” the governor noted in a statement.
Authorities are conducting investigations into the incident to determine the exact cause and prevent future occurrences.
The nation mourns this avoidable tragedy, with calls for reforms to prevent future occurrences. The loss of lives and livelihoods serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stricter safety measures in fuel transportation and handling across the country.
