Court Restrains PDP from Removing Damagum as National Chairman

PDP internal crisis deepens as the Federal High Court restrains the NEC and BoT from removing Acting Chairman Umar Damagum.

The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn as the Federal High Court in Abuja restrained the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) from removing Umar Damagum as the acting national chairman. This decision follows a dispute where a faction of the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) suspended Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu for alleged disloyalty.

Justice Peter Lifu ruled on Friday at the federal high court, mandating that only Damagum be recognized as the PDP national chairman until the party’s national convention in December 2025.

However, despite the legal tension, Governor Bala Mohammed reassured party members that the PDP remains intact and is working towards resolving its internal conflict. After a closed-door meeting with key stakeholders, he emphasized the party’s commitment to amicably addressing the crisis.

“We have met and discussed these situations extensively with the acting National Chairman,” said Mohammed. “We have agreed to work together with other party organs, including the BoT, Governors’ Forum, and various caucuses, to resolve all issues.”

Mohammed reiterated that the party does not recognize any factions and that PDP leaders are committed to collaboration. He also mentioned ongoing consultations with PDP governors to determine the party’s next steps.

“This has been a productive outing,” he added, “and we are confident that the party will come together to resolve all contending issues. We have agreed to do whatever it takes to restore the party’s glory and position it for victory in the 2027 elections.”

The PDP’s leadership crisis underscores the party’s challenges as it strives to maintain unity while preparing for upcoming electoral contests. Damagum’s position remains secured by the court, but party members will need to continue their efforts to address the internal disputes that threaten the party’s stability.
