The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood alert, warning of upcoming water releases from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam starting on September 17. According to NIHSA Director-General Umar Mohammed, the water will be initially released at a rate of 100 cubic metres per second (m³/s), gradually increasing to 1000 m³/s over a week. These controlled releases aim to prevent major flooding in Nigeria by managing the River Benue’s capacity.
States along the River Benue—Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers—have been urged to implement flood preparedness measures. Mohammed stressed the importance of governments at all levels stepping up vigilance to mitigate the potential impacts of increased water flow.
While NIHSA assures Nigerians that current flow levels remain within warning thresholds, recent floods in Maiduguri, which displaced thousands and resulted in over 30 deaths following the collapse of Alau Dam, have heightened concerns. Over 400,000 people were displaced by this incident, and authorities are now on high alert as water levels are expected to rise in the coming days.
