Brighton recorded a remarkable 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, marking their third straight Premier League away win against the Red Devils. The match, played amidst tributes to United legend Denis Law, saw second-half goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter secure three points for the industrious visitors.

Manchester United started the day by honoring the late Denis Law, who passed away on Friday at the age of 84. As part of the emotional pre-match ceremony, Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Kidd, Paddy Crerand, and Alex Stepney laid a wreath while a bagpiper played Flower of Scotland. Law, a member of the iconic United Trinity alongside Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best, remains third on the club’s all-time scoring list with 237 goals in 404 appearances.

Brighton wasted no time asserting their dominance. Within five minutes, Carlos Baleba lofted a ball to Kaoru Mitoma, who selflessly set up Yankuba Minteh for the opener. Manchester United struggled to find rhythm but were handed an equalizer in the 23rd minute. Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s poor clearance allowed Amad Diallo to set up Joshua Zirkzee, who was clumsily brought down in the box by Baleba. Bruno Fernandes coolly converted the resulting penalty, leveling the score at 1-1.

Second-Half Dominance

Brighton regained control in the second half, showing why they have become a thorn in United’s side, having won six of their last seven league encounters. Although a goal by Yasin Ayari was disallowed after a VAR review, Mitoma restored Brighton’s lead on the hour mark by converting Minteh’s cross.

United’s attempts at a comeback were thwarted by Brighton’s solid defense, with Lewis Dunk and Joel Veltman making crucial interventions. The Red Devils’ misfortune was sealed in the 76th minute when goalkeeper Andre Onana fumbled Ayari’s cross, allowing substitute Georginio Rutter to capitalize and score his fourth goal in three matches.

The result leaves Brighton ninth in the Premier League table, following their recent 2-0 win over Ipswich, while United languishes in 13th place, struggling for consistency with just one win in their last six league games.

Brighton’s clinical performance, combined with United’s defensive errors, highlighted the growing gap between the two sides. For United, the search for stability continues, while Brighton’s rising form solidifies their reputation as a formidable force in the Premier League.
