Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Nuri Şahin following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Bologna on Tuesday. This marks the club’s fourth successive loss in all competitions, leaving them languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga and seven points adrift of a Champions League qualification spot.
Şahin, 36, was appointed as Dortmund’s head coach in the summer after serving as an assistant to Edin Terzic. He played a pivotal role in last season’s surprise run to the Champions League final, where Dortmund were narrowly defeated by Real Madrid. However, Şahin’s tenure as head coach has been marked by struggles, with only six wins in 19 games and a recent four-match losing streak sealing his fate.
In a statement, Dortmund’s sporting director Lars Ricken expressed the club’s disappointment:
“We value Nuri Şahin and his work very much. We hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end, we had hoped that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together.
“After four defeats in a row, due to only one win in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”
Şahin’s departure signals a turbulent phase for the German giants, who were runners-up in last season’s Champions League but have struggled to maintain that momentum this campaign. The club is expected to announce an interim coach in the coming days as they aim to salvage their season and fight for a place in European competitions.
Fans and analysts alike will closely watch Dortmund’s next steps as they look to restore their form and competitiveness under new leadership.
