The APC secures 16 out of 18 chairmanship seats in Ondo State's local government elections as PDP boycotts the polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in 16 out of the 18 chairmanship seats in the recently concluded local government elections in Ondo State. The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), Joseph Aeemo, at the commission’s headquarters in Akure on Sunday.

While the election in Ondo West Local Government Area was rescheduled and results are awaited from Owo Local Government Area, the APC has dominated the polls across the state. The elections, held on Saturday, saw participation from twelve political parties vying for chairmanship and councillorship positions.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew from the elections, alleging a lack of confidence in ODIEC’s ability to conduct a credible poll. This left the contest to parties such as the Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People’s Party, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Boot Party, Labour Party, National Rescue Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressive Party, and Zenith Labour Party.

The council election, initially scheduled for earlier dates but postponed multiple times, was finally conducted on January 18, 2025. This marked the first local government election in the state since August 23, 2020. The tenure of officials elected in the 2020 elections expired on August 22, 2023, leaving the administration of the state’s 18 council areas in the hands of civil servants. Heads of Local Government Administrations managed these councils during the interim period.

The successful conclusion of the elections has paved the way for the APC to continue its dominance in Ondo State’s local government administration. However, the PDP’s boycott and allegations of credibility concerns may cast a shadow on the overall perception of the electoral process.
