Akwa Ibom to Implement N80,000 Minimum Wage with Arrears from November 2024

The Akwa Ibom State Government is set to begin the implementation of the new ₦80,000 minimum wage for verified workers starting with January 2025 salaries, including arrears from November 2024. Governor Umo Eno made this announcement during the 2025 Thanksgiving Service of the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at Ikot Ekpene Udo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area.

Governor Eno commended the NUJ for their professionalism and partnership in advancing his administration’s ARISE Agenda. He praised the leadership of the State Council Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, and assured the completion of the Union Secretariat during Etuk’s tenure. Additionally, the governor announced the donation of an SUV for the NUJ chairman and saloon cars for the eleven State Working Committee members.

Governor Eno reiterated his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, emphasizing that the new minimum wage would be paid only to verified workers. He stressed the importance of verification to ensure accountability, stating:

“If you haven’t been verified into the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service, I will not pay you. For those verified, payment from 1st November will commence this January.”

He highlighted his efforts to clear the ₦97 billion backlog of gratuities and arrears owed to state workers, underscoring his dedication to fulfilling promises to the workforce.

Collaboration with the NUJ

The NUJ Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, expressed gratitude to Governor Eno for his support of journalists in the state. Etuk reaffirmed the union’s commitment to fostering a collaborative relationship with the government and advancing the ARISE Agenda’s goals. Hosting the Thanksgiving Service in Ikot Ekpene Udo was part of the union’s effort to honor Governor Eno’s media-friendly policies.

Governor Eno’s focus on workers’ welfare and infrastructure development underscores his administration’s dedication to creating a thriving workforce in Akwa Ibom. His leadership highlights the critical role of transparency, collaboration, and commitment in governance.

This latest move positions Akwa Ibom as a leading example of prioritizing workers’ needs while fostering a harmonious relationship between the government and stakeholders.
