At least 60 people, mostly women and children, have died after a boat capsized in Nigeria’s Niger state. The wooden boat, carrying nearly 300 passengers returning from the Maulud religious festival, sank on Tuesday night on the River Niger near the Gbajibo Community. Jibril Abdullahi Muregi, chairman of Mokwa local government, confirmed that 160 people have been rescued, while rescue efforts continue. The cause of the incident remains unclear, though overcrowding and poor maintenance are common factors in Nigerian waterway accidents.
