The Zamfara State Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the N70,000 minimum wage, a move aimed at preventing the state chapter of the NLC from embarking on an indefinite strike.

Agreement Reached After Prolonged Discussions

The deal was finalized late Monday night following extended negotiations between NLC officials and state government representatives. Beyond agreeing to the wage increase, the MoU also addressed other labor concerns, including improved welfare benefits for state employees.

Speaking after the agreement, Zamfara NLC Chairman, Comrade Sani Haliru, praised the state government’s commitment to addressing workers’ demands. “This MoU is a victory for workers’ rights,” he stated, confirming that the planned strike action has been suspended.

The Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Nakwada, represented the administration during the negotiations. He emphasized the government’s dedication to fostering positive labor relations, stating, “Today’s agreement is a win for both sides. By March 2025, the N70,000 minimum wage will be fully implemented.”

The implementation is scheduled to begin in March 2025, as the state undertakes a comprehensive workforce verification process. Nakwada explained, “The verification exercise aims to align the nominal roll with the payroll for better accuracy and transparency. Over 50% of this work is already complete.”

Meanwhile, Zamfara was among 12 states identified by the NLC for potential industrial action over delays in implementing the national minimum wage approved by the federal government. The timely agreement underscores the administration’s responsiveness and commitment to its workforce.

Also Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration has received commendations for its proactive approach, with labor leaders expressing optimism for continued cooperation in addressing workers’ needs.

Furthermore, this development sets a positive precedent for other states yet to meet the new national minimum wage requirements.
