Victor Osimhen is now a significant doubt for Nigeria’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Libya, The Super Eagles striker, who has been in impressive form, sustained a muscle injury during Galatasaray’s league match against Kasımpaşa last weekend.
Osimhen, who scored twice in the first half, was substituted after half-time, initially downplaying the exit as a precautionary measure. However, the latest update from Galatasaray suggests that the injury could be more serious.
In a statement released on the club’s official website, Galatasaray confirmed that Osimhen is undergoing treatment for the muscle strain. The statement reads:
“The treatment of our football player Victor Osimhen, who experienced pain in his upper left posterior muscle during the Kasımpaşa match in the seventh week of the Trendyol Super League, and who was diagnosed with strain and bleeding in his upper left posterior muscle group during his examination at our sponsor hospital Medicana today, has commenced.”
With Super Eagles caretaker coach, Austin Eguavoen, set to announce the squad for the AFCON qualifiers this week, Osimhen’s availability is in doubt.
The Super Eagles will host Libya in Uyo on October 11 before traveling to Benghazi for the return leg on October 15. The timeline for Osimhen’s recovery will depend on the severity of the muscle strain. A mild strain could see him out for 3 to 6 weeks, but a more serious injury may require a longer recovery period, possibly involving surgery.
Osimhen’s absence would be a significant blow to Nigeria’s hopes of securing qualification, as he has been one of the team’s standout players in recent months.
Fans and the Super Eagles management will be keeping a close eye on his recovery progress as the qualifiers approach.
