Veteran Nollywood actress Hilda Dokubo has voiced her concerns about the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, asserting that the situation extends beyond the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. According to her, the crisis is a calculated attempt to gain control over the state’s economic resources.
In a recent address to the press, Dokubo expressed her dismay at the recent developments, describing them as a deliberate effort to destabilize the state.
“I’ll say it over and over, what is going on in Rivers State is not about Fubara. What is going on in Rivers State is a comeback for the economic soul of the state. Someone wants to grab the economic soul of Rivers State,” she asserted.
The actress highlighted notable achievements of the Fubara administration, particularly in the civil service and infrastructure development:
- Civil Service: According to Dokubo, under Governor Fubara’s leadership, civil servants received their salaries promptly, including a 13th-month payment during Christmas, a first in the state’s history.
- Infrastructure: The administration made strides in connecting riverine communities through newly constructed roads, addressing long-standing challenges.
A Voice of Discontent
Dokubo’s passionate critique extends beyond the state’s leadership, as she accused the federal government of undermining Governor Fubara’s efforts. She described the current state of affairs as “criminality” rather than democracy, referencing recent political events in Lagos.
“What’s going on in Rivers State is not democracy. It’s criminality. It’s not worse than what happened in Lagos a few days ago,” she declared.
The actress also took to Instagram to condemn President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. She suggested that the move was a ploy to annex the state’s economic resources.
“State of emergency because for two years we have had peace! State of emergency because you want to capture the economic soul of Rivers State! State of emergency because of one man? Shameless! Perhaps Mr President should say he wants to annex Rivers State!” Dokubo wrote.
Dokubo’s comments have sparked mixed reactions from the public. While some commend her courage to speak out, others believe the state of emergency was a necessary measure to address the escalating tension in the state.
As the political situation in Rivers State continues to unfold, the voices of influential figures like Hilda Dokubo add a significant dimension to the narrative, reflecting the deep-rooted complexities of the crisis.
