Nigerian activist VeryDarkMan has announced that his newly launched NGO, aimed at overhauling the country’s public education system, has received an impressive ₦21,620,780 in donations within 24 hours of his initial appeal. The funds, which came from both large and small contributions, mark the beginning of his initiative to bring innovative reforms to Nigeria’s public schools.
In a statement following the outpouring of support, VeryDarkMan expressed gratitude to those who donated, particularly emphasizing the importance of smaller contributions, which he said made up the bulk of the total amount raised. He noted that contributions ranged from as little as ₦72 to ₦2 million, with many people contributing despite their limited resources.
He said, “It’s barely 24 hours since I announced my NGO, and if I tell you how much is in that account now, you won’t believe it. First of all, shout out to everyone who sent money. I saw love and support from amounts like ₦72, ₦100, ₦22, ₦500. Even people who didn’t have much still wanted to support.”
As part of his commitment to transparency, VeryDarkMan vowed to make every expenditure public, ensuring that all donations are used solely for their intended purpose—improving the public education system. He also took the opportunity to criticize the lack of transparency among many Nigerian NGOs, accusing them of misusing funds for personal gain.
He declared, “Many NGOs are scamming people in this country. They are not using the money they receive for the right purposes. But with my NGO, I’ll make sure to expose them by being fully transparent. If I spend ₦10, I’ll let the public know.”
Focus on Education Reform
The activist emphasized that the core mission of his NGO is to reform the public education sector, which he described as outdated and lacking in excitement for students. His plan includes bringing in younger, more dynamic teachers and introducing modern teaching methods, such as the use of technology like projectors, to make learning more engaging.
He also pointed out the need to introduce vocational training early in the education system, allowing students to explore potential career paths from a young age. VeryDarkMan advocates for a shift in focus towards practical skills that would better prepare students for the future, adding that the traditional academic route may not be suitable for everyone.
“Education should advance with the times. Not everyone needs to follow the traditional academic route. We should introduce vocational training early so that students can start thinking about their future careers from primary school,” he said.
He also spoke about reviving cultural activities and other extracurricular programs to make education more engaging and fun for students.
Commitment to Transparency
VeryDarkMan ended his statement by reiterating his commitment to transparency and accountability, urging the public to continue supporting the cause. He provided account details for those who wish to make further contributions, promising to publicize every expenditure and set a new standard for how NGOs should operate in Nigeria.
