International Women’s Day 2025

The United Nations has called on women worldwide to remain steadfast in the face of adversity, urging collective action toward gender equality as the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025 on March 8.

Recognizing the ongoing struggles for gender equity, the UN described IWD as a moment to demand action and push for the full implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which remains a key blueprint for achieving women’s rights globally.

“International Women’s Day is a chance to rise and demand action to deliver on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to make the world equal and better for everyone,” the UN stated in a message on its X handle.

Highlighting the power of women in driving change, the UN emphasized that every woman standing her ground, every girl with access to education, and every leader advocating for equality contributes to a more just world.

Progress in Women’s Rights

While acknowledging persistent inequalities, the UN also outlined key areas of progress in advancing women’s rights:

  • Combatting Violence Against Women: 89% of governments now prioritize ending violence against women, with 193 countries implementing legal measures to combat it. Countries with domestic violence laws report fewer cases of abuse.
  • Education Equality: Most of the world has achieved gender parity in education. Bridging the gap in science and technology ensures equal opportunities and promotes innovations that serve humanity.
  • Improved Care Services and Work Conditions: More states have strengthened care services, with 32% of countries now promoting better wages and safer working conditions for care workers.
  • Women in Peace and Security: 112 countries have developed national plans to involve women in peace and security processes, a significant rise from just 19 countries in 2010.

Theme: “Invest in Women, Accelerate Action”

The theme for International Women’s Day 2025, “Invest in Women, Accelerate Action,” underscores the urgent need for financial and policy-driven commitments to close gender gaps and empower women. Investment in women is not just about fairness—it is a crucial driver of economic and social progress.

As the world marks this occasion, the UN’s message remains clear: empowering women is key to achieving a more equal and sustainable future.
