In an inspiring move to support the development of young talent in Nigeria, Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess In Slums, has officially opened the first-ever Chess Innovation Hub in Lagos. This initiative, a product of a partnership with Lufthansa and Help Alliance, aims to empower children with the resources needed to unlock their potential through creative and intellectual pursuits.
Announcing the launch, Onakoya said, “I have always believed that every child, no matter their background, deserves the opportunity to develop their full potential. This hub will be a sanctuary where dreams are nurtured and where we’ll inspire children to have faith in their own ideas.”
The Chess Innovation Hub will focus on providing innovative educational programmes such as Coding, Robotics, AI/Machine Learning, advanced chess training, and a book reading club. It will serve as a reimagined educational space for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially those from Makoko, as well as homeless children in Yaba, Ebute Metta, and Surulere.
Onakoya’s long-term vision includes expanding this model across Africa: “Our aim is to establish a Chess Innovation Hub in every community across Africa, focusing on talent development for the future of work.”
By creating this hub, Onakoya and his partners hope to provide these children with opportunities to thrive, fostering a future where their creativity and intellect can flourish despite societal limitations.
