Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, proved once again why she remains one of the greatest hurdlers of all time after storming to a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships.
Amusan, 28, clocked an impressive 12.29 seconds in a thrilling race but was narrowly beaten to gold by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who set a new national record with 12.24s. Grace Stark of the United States took bronze in 12.34s, while Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44s.
The Nigerian star, who etched her name in history in 2022 as the first African woman to win a world title in the 100m hurdles, was aiming to reclaim her crown. Despite missing out on gold, her silver medal adds to her illustrious track record, which includes the world record (12.12s), multiple Diamond League victories, and Commonwealth Games success.
Amusan’s performance comes as a powerful comeback after missing the final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her Tokyo showing silences critics and reaffirms her position among the elite of global athletics.
Nigeria’s medal chase at the Tokyo championships is not over. Rising star Ezekiel Nathaniel advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 400m hurdles after clocking 48.37 seconds in the heats. The 21-year-old will aim to reach the final and challenge for a medal when he competes again on Wednesday.
With Amusan’s silver already on the board, Nigerians will be watching closely as the nation’s athletes continue their quest for more podium finishes at the World Championships.
