President Tinubu vows to defeat terrorism and restore peace amid U.S. re-designation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern,

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace across Nigeria, assuring both citizens and international partners of his government’s determination to safeguard the nation’s unity and stability.

Speaking at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja before presiding over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Tinubu addressed the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to re-designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” — a move that has drawn global attention.

The President struck a confident and diplomatic tone, emphasizing that his government is fully engaging with international partners to address security challenges through collaboration rather than confrontation.

“The most important thing is that despite political headwinds and public anxiety, we will continue to engage our partners. The success of the $2.3 billion Eurobond, oversubscribed by 400 per cent, shows strong global confidence in Nigeria’s direction,” Tinubu said. “We will defeat terrorism, we will overcome the CPC designation, and we will move forward with unity and purpose under the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He urged Nigerians to remain resilient, stressing that his administration’s top priority is to eliminate all criminal elements across the country. “Nigeria is one family,” he added, “and we shall spare no effort until every form of terrorism is eradicated.”

Nigeria Engages U.S. Diplomatically
After the FEC meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed that diplomatic channels have been opened with the U.S. to address concerns surrounding the CPC listing.

He noted that while Nigeria respects the U.S. decision, it remains a sovereign nation committed to the safety of its citizens and the protection of religious freedoms. “We prefer that this situation be resolved diplomatically. There is no panic; the government is doing what is necessary to protect lives and maintain our sovereignty,” Idris said.

He added that the Tinubu administration is addressing insecurity head-on and will continue to engage the international community with transparency and mutual respect.

Nigerians in the U.S. Oppose Foreign Military Intervention
Meanwhile, a coalition of 19 Nigerian organizations in the U.S., under the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN), has cautioned against foreign military intervention in Nigeria under the pretext of protecting Christians.

In a statement by its President, Temi Aregbesola, OAN stressed that Nigeria’s sovereignty must remain intact. “While we share concerns about violence against all citizens, we reject the idea of foreign military intervention. Nigeria must take full responsibility for safeguarding its people,” the group stated.

U.S. Military Options on the Table
According to a report by The New York Times, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has presented three possible military intervention plans — light, medium, and heavy — to the Pentagon.

  • The light option involves U.S. logistical and intelligence support for Nigerian forces.
  • The medium option considers drone strikes against militant targets.
  • The heavy option would see a large-scale U.S. military presence, though this is reportedly not a current priority.

Military analysts, however, doubt the feasibility of any full-scale intervention, citing logistical and political challenges. Maj. Gen. Paul D. Eaton told The New York Times that such an operation “would be a fiasco,” noting that the U.S. public and President Trump show little interest in a prolonged ground war in Nigeria.

As the diplomatic dialogue unfolds, President Tinubu’s assurance of resilience and unity underscores Nigeria’s resolve to handle its security challenges internally while maintaining strategic international cooperation.
