In a significant political shakeup, three members of the House of Representatives have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), abandoning their former political parties. The move was confirmed during Thursday’s plenary session, as their defection letters were read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The lawmakers include:
- Hon. Oluwole Oke, representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in Osun State, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
- Hon. Kabiru Rurum, representing Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency, Kano (NNPP)
- Hon. Abdullahi Rogo, representing Rogo/Dawakin Tofa Federal Constituency, Kano (NNPP)
Oke, a six-term legislator, had previously hinted at his intention to leave the PDP during a political engagement in April, citing deep consultations with political allies, constituents, and family as reasons behind his decision.
The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, was physically present in the chamber to welcome the defectors. He was accompanied by notable party leaders, including FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, and other high-ranking APC stakeholders from Kano State.
The presence of Ganduje during the official switch was seen as a strategic move, signaling APC’s intensified efforts to consolidate power ahead of upcoming political cycles.
The defections come amid growing political realignments across Nigeria as parties begin to regroup ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts suggest that the APC’s strengthening grip in the House could significantly impact legislative direction and power dynamics.
The PDP and NNPP are yet to issue official reactions as of the time of filing this report.
This development adds to the increasing trend of lawmakers and political figures gravitating toward the ruling party in what appears to be a calculated move for political leverage and access to central influence.
