Tax Reform Bills ‘Dead on Arrival’ – Senator Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume calls for the withdrawal of President Tinubu's tax reform bills, labeling them "dead on arrival."

Ndume, known for his candid views, argued that given the current economic challenges in Nigeria, increasing taxes is not a viable solution. He stated, “Nigerians are not willing to talk about or pay any tax now considering the situation we are in.” The senator emphasized that while Nigerians are open to paying taxes, they can only do so when they are financially capable, and at present, many are struggling to survive.

The senator, who is a member of the President’s All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed that the government should focus on reducing the tax burden on citizens rather than increasing it. He noted, “What the President needs to do is to withdraw the bill, educate Nigerians, and make us understand it,” referring to the widespread opposition the bills have garnered.

The tax reform proposals, particularly those concerning Value Added Tax (VAT), have faced backlash from various political leaders, including all 36 state governors, who have urged the President to withdraw them. Despite the criticisms, President Tinubu has maintained that the bills will not be withdrawn, although he has suggested that changes may be made during the legislative process.

Ndume’s comments reflect a growing concern among political figures regarding the timing of the tax reforms, with many calling for more consultation and a focus on improving the economy before increasing the financial burden on Nigerians. The fate of the tax reform bills now hangs in the balance, with significant opposition from both lawmakers and the public.
