Pressure is mounting on Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). A coalition of youths across the state has intensified calls for the governor to align Taraba with the Federal Government, saying such a move would open doors for greater development opportunities, federal projects, and appointments.
The youths, under a coalition group, made the appeal during a press briefing in Jalingo, the state capital. They argued that Taraba has suffered political isolation for years, which has slowed infrastructural growth and limited access to federal benefits.
“If Governor Kefas joins the All Progressives Congress (APC), Taraba will gain direct access to federal projects, resources, and opportunities that our people, especially the youth, desperately need,” the group stated.
The group emphasized that their call was not driven by partisan politics but by a desire to secure a better future for Taraba people. “We want development, not division. We want roads, power, jobs, and opportunities that secure our future,” they added.
They also praised Governor Kefas for his leadership style, describing him as “a man of courage and vision” who could make history by aligning with the ruling party. “Governor Kefas has already shown he is a man of courage and vision. We urge him to make history by aligning with the centre so Taraba can rise and take its rightful place in Nigeria’s progress,” the statement read.
Mixed Reactions as Speculations Grow
The call comes amid growing political speculation that Governor Kefas, who was elected under the PDP, may be considering a switch to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. While some stakeholders see the possible defection as a strategic move for political relevance, others dismiss it as unnecessary distraction.
An APC chieftain and former governorship aspirant, Chief David Sabo Kente, popularly known as DSK, denied claims that he was paving the way for the governor’s defection. Kente, who hails from Wukari Local Government Area, the same hometown as Governor Kefas, said he had no knowledge of any such plan.
“I want to put it on record that I am a loyal member of the APC,” Kente said. “Governor Kefas has not informed me or anyone I know about joining our party. For now, it remains speculation.”
Kente added that while he had previously announced he would not contest against Kefas in 2027, pressure from supporters had made him reconsider. “Consultations are ongoing, and I may contest the election after all,” he revealed.
Analysts See Political Realignment Ahead of 2027
Political observers believe the growing calls for Kefas to defect are part of broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. Since taking office in 2023, Governor Kefas has earned respect across party lines for his calm disposition and commitment to inclusive governance.
However, reports indicate that the relationship between the PDP-led Taraba government and the APC-controlled Federal Government has occasionally been strained, particularly regarding access to federal appointments and infrastructure projects.
A political analyst in Jalingo said, “The 2027 election is already taking shape, and everyone is positioning. The pressure on Kefas to join the APC is part of a larger strategy to align the state with national power.”
Another commentator warned that such a move could weaken the PDP’s strong base in Taraba. “Defection is a double-edged sword,” he said. “It could bring short-term federal benefits but might alienate Kefas from his loyal supporters.”
Governor Kefas Maintains Silence Amid Political Tension
Governor Kefas has not publicly commented on the matter. Sources within Government House in Jalingo told 9am News Nigeria that he remains focused on delivering good governance, not political speculation.
One senior aide said, “His Excellency is not distracted by rumours. He is focused on his vision for Taraba improving education, enhancing security, and developing infrastructure.”
Since assuming office, Kefas has introduced several policies, including free basic education and initiatives to attract private investment in agriculture and tourism. Despite challenges such as insecurity in parts of Southern Taraba, his administration continues to receive praise for its people-centered approach.
With just two years to the next general elections, Taraba State faces a defining moment. The governor’s next political move whether to remain in the PDP or join the APC could reshape the state’s political landscape for years.
While some youths insist that aligning with the APC will bring federal development, others believe that stability within the PDP is vital for sustaining ongoing reforms. As one political elder noted, “Whatever Kefas decides will determine who controls the future of Taraba politics. All eyes are on him.”
