Nigeria international and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly in an induced coma after undergoing urgent abdominal surgery, following a collision during his club’s Premier League fixture against Leicester City. The 26-year-old suffered the injury late in the 2-2 draw and is now said to be receiving intensive medical care.
According to a 9am News report, the incident occurred as Awoniyi attempted to score, sliding into the post and immediately requiring on-pitch medical attention. Though he initially signaled to manager Nuno Espirito Santo that he was fit to continue, he was later substituted after experiencing severe discomfort—leaving Forest with 10 men during the game’s critical final moments.
The Daily Mail reports that the abdominal injury was so severe it could have been fatal without immediate medical intervention. The surgery that followed has been described as “complex and urgent.” Forest officials now confirm that Awoniyi is “recovering well so far” but remains under close observation in hospital.
Amid online speculation surrounding a supposed altercation between Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and head coach Nuno, the club released an extensive statement on Tuesday to clarify events and emphasize their commitment to player welfare.
“The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game, and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first,” the club stated.
Forest confirmed that Marinakis entered the pitch in the final minutes of the game, visibly distressed by Awoniyi’s condition. However, the club strongly denied reports of any confrontation with the coach or staff.
“His deep frustration at seeing our player lying on the ground in severe pain – something no one with genuine care could ignore – triggered him to go onto the pitch,” the statement read. “It was instinctive, human, and a reflection of just how much this team and its people mean to him.”
The club urged commentators and former players to avoid “fake news” and sensationalism at such a sensitive time, stressing that mental and physical well-being must take precedence over online narratives.
“Let concern come before commentary,” the statement concluded. “In moments like these, the game must unite around those who put their bodies and minds on the line every week.”
The Nigerian forward, a key figure in Nottingham Forest’s survival and ambition push, has previously battled injuries but remained a vital part of the squad. This new injury presents a serious medical challenge, and fans and fellow professionals have poured in messages of support across social media.
The Super Eagles forward has contributed important goals in the Premier League this season and is one of Nigeria’s most consistent attackers in Europe.
Forest’s medical team has confirmed that Awoniyi’s treatment followed all proper protocols and that a full update on his condition will be issued when appropriate.
