The Super Falcons have qualified for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-1 draw with the Amazons of Benin Republic in the second leg of their qualifier on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Nigeria went into the tie with a two-goal advantage from the first leg in Lome, Togo, where Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo found the back of the net. The 0-2 away victory proved decisive, giving the Falcons a 3-1 aggregate win to book their ticket to Morocco.

At the MKO Abiola Stadium, defender Ashleigh Plumptre opened the scoring with a well-timed header from Okoronkwo’s corner. The Al-Ittihad star’s goal was her first for Nigeria since switching allegiance from England in 2017.

Benin Republic equalised in the 61st minute through Yasmine Djibril, but it was not enough to spark a comeback. The Super Falcons maintained composure until the final whistle, securing another major qualification under coach Justin Madugu.

Falcons Eye 11th WAFCON Title

Nigeria are the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having lifted the WAFCON trophy ten times. Their last triumph came in Morocco after a dramatic comeback against the host nation. Previous victories were recorded in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.

The 2025 edition of the Women’s AFCON will run from March 17 to April 3 in Morocco. It will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Semi-finalists will earn automatic World Cup spots, while two additional teams can qualify through intercontinental playoffs.

Looking Ahead to Global Competition

The Super Falcons have featured in every edition of the Women’s World Cup since its inception. They reached the Round of 16 in the 2023 tournament before losing to eventual finalists England on penalties.

Nigeria’s qualification highlights their consistency as Africa’s leading women’s football nation. With a blend of experience and emerging talent, the team remains a strong contender for the next WAFCON crown and a potential force at the 2027 World Cup.

According to a 9am News report, the Falcons’ latest achievement reinforces Nigeria’s dominance in women’s football across the continent.
