The Super Falcons of Nigeria took a major step toward qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating the Benin Republic 2-0 in the first leg of their qualifying tie on Friday at the Stade de Kégué.

Nigeria started the match on a strong note, dominating possession and creating several early chances. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade almost put the Falcons ahead in the seventh minute when her powerful shot struck the woodwork.

Benin Republic’s goalkeeper produced a series of fine saves to keep the scoreline level, frustrating Nigeria’s attacking efforts led by coach Justine Madugu.

However, the breakthrough finally came in the 24th minute when Chiwendu Ihezuo, who plays for Pachuca in Mexico, slotted home from close range after a brilliant assist from Deborah Abiodun.

The Super Falcons continued to press forward, and their persistence paid off again late in the first half when Esther Okoronkwo doubled Nigeria’s advantage — once again set up by Abiodun, who was instrumental in midfield.

Despite Nigeria’s dominance in the second half, they failed to add to their tally as Benin’s defence held firm under sustained pressure.

The return leg of the qualifier will take place at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta next Tuesday, where the Super Falcons will aim to seal their qualification for the 2026 WAFCON.
