The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has announced the release of withheld local government allocations, assuring that necessary measures are in place to ensure prompt payment of workers’ salaries.
Speaking during a meeting with Heads of Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt, Ibas emphasized that the gathering was a crucial step in restoring stability and progress in the state.
Acknowledging the economic hardship in the Niger Delta region, Ibas lamented that despite the area’s wealth of natural resources, its people continue to struggle.
“This is unacceptable,” he stated, stressing the need for transformation and financial accountability.
He also expressed deep concern over salary delays across local government areas, emphasizing that he understands the struggles of affected workers.
“I feel the pain of the workers,” he assured, confirming that the withheld allocations have been released and that salaries would be paid without further delay.
However, Ibas made it clear that strict financial accountability would be enforced. He directed all local government administrators to submit their wage bills with proper documentation through the Office of the Head of Service.
“This administration will not tolerate financial recklessness,” he warned, vowing to scrutinize public funds and take action against mismanagement.
Ibas also stressed the importance of collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies to enhance security at the grassroots level.
“You must take the lead in ensuring security within your domains,” he urged local government administrators.
NULGE Pledges Support for Stability
Reacting to Ibas’ assurances, Clifford Paul, the President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Administrator of Port Harcourt LGA, acknowledged the developmental strides made in the state despite its political conflicts.
Paul commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas, citing his competence and leadership abilities. He pledged full support for peace and stability while urging the administrator to prioritize workers’ welfare.
He also revealed that local government workers are currently owed two months’ salaries, but expressed hope that payments would now be made following the release of withheld allocations.
Paul encouraged stakeholders to seize this opportunity to rebuild trust and foster unity in Rivers State.
