The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed its commitment to upholding court orders concerning the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. In a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the police acknowledged receiving a restraining order preventing them from providing security during the elections.
The Command also referenced the September 30, 2024 judgment from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which bars the Nigeria Police Force from participating in the elections. The Force Legal Department advised that this ruling takes precedence over any other considerations.
The police also noted a recent protest by members of the opposition PDP in Rivers State, calling for adherence to the court’s orders and the cancellation of the elections. The Nigeria Police has urged all citizens to remain law-abiding and assured that necessary measures will be taken to maintain order during the election period.
In compliance with the court ruling, the Rivers State Police Command will not participate in the upcoming Local Government Elections and has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Officers, and Tactical Commanders to ensure full adherence to the judgment. All other security agencies are also expected to comply.
The Nigeria Police Force calls on all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and seek legal redress for any grievances regarding the election process.
