Rivers State House of Assembly Locks Out Governor Fubara Amidst Political Tensions

A dramatic standoff unfolded at the Rivers State House of Assembly complex on Wednesday when Governor Siminalayi Fubara arrived, only to find the entrance gate locked by security personnel. Despite claims that proper communication had been made, the governor and his convoy were denied entry, deepening the ongoing political tensions in the state.

According to reports from 9am News Nigeria, security operatives at the Assembly complex locked the gates upon the governor’s arrival, citing the absence of official communication regarding his visit. However, Fubara refuted this claim, stating that he had formally notified Speaker Martins Amaewhule via a letter and had also attempted to reach him by phone since Tuesday.

The governor’s visit was likely tied to his directive for the full implementation of the February 28, 2025, Supreme Court judgment, which nullified certain actions taken by the state government and mandated corrective measures. In response, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) announced plans for a fresh local government election on August 9, 2025 to align with the ruling.

In a separate development, Tammy Danagogo, Secretary to the State Government, sent a letter dated March 7, 2025, requesting a meeting with lawmakers on March 10, 2025 to discuss both the re-presentation of the 2025 budget and a peace dialogue amid ongoing political hostilities.

However, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Amaewhule, insisted that the governor must follow the appropriate protocol for such invitations. This further signals the deepening rift between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state.

The unfolding crisis raises concerns about governance stability in Rivers State, with political observers questioning whether both parties will reach a resolution or escalate hostilities further.
