Former Vice President and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, strongly rejected the outcome of the election. In a statement, he described the exercise as “a travesty of democracy” and “an absurdity” carried out by what he termed an “occupation government” in Rivers State.
Atiku urged opposition parties in Rivers to reject the results, warning that the alleged manipulation of the process could push Nigeria further down a “dangerous curve.”
On the other hand, the PDP in Rivers State commended the elections. The party’s Legal Adviser, Okachi Ordu, hailed the exercise as “transparent, credible, and the best ever conducted in the state.”
Similarly, Chibudom Nwuche, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chairman of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), applauded RSIEC for conducting a peaceful election across all 23 local government areas. He praised voters for turning out in large numbers and maintaining decorum during the process.
The outcome of the local government elections cements APC’s dominance in Rivers State’s grassroots politics, though PDP’s stronghold in key areas like Obio/Akpor and PHALGA underscores the continuing political rivalry in the state. Analysts believe this development could significantly shape alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
