Remembering Mohbad: One Year Since His Tragic Passing

One year after the tragic death of Nigerian rapper Mohbad, fans continue to demand justice as investigations linger. His legacy lives on, but questions remain about the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Mohbad One Year Anniversary

On September 12, 2023, Nigeria was rocked by the sudden and tragic death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known by his stage name Mohbad, at the age of 27. His untimely demise under suspicious circumstances in Lagos shocked the nation, plunging fans and Nigerians into mourning. Today, a year later, the calls for justice remain loud as the country reflects on the loss of the young street rapper.

On the anniversary of his passing, peaceful protests were staged, with one outside the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ikorodu, led by Yoruba actor Yomi Fabiyi, chanting “Justice for Mohbad.” The protests are a continuation of the public’s demand for answers surrounding his mysterious death, as widespread suspicions linger over the role of former associates in his death.

In the days following his passing, Mohbad’s body, initially buried in haste, was exhumed for a post-mortem due to the growing outrage. Witnesses claimed that his body appeared to have been manipulated, with rumors circulating about the involvement of his former record label, Marlian Records, led by Naira Marley. Videos and reports have since surfaced, showing past physical and emotional abuse suffered by Mohbad, further fueling suspicions of foul play.

Mohbad’s Autopsy

Despite the autopsy conducted in September 2023, delays in the release of results have added to public unease. Toxicology and skeletal analysis were reportedly sent to NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, USA, for further examination, but no clear updates have been provided, leading to frustrations over the prolonged silence.

As the investigation continues, Mohbad’s mother, Mrs. Abosede Aloba, has urged fans to remember her son through prayers rather than protests. She also pleaded with authorities to release his remains so that the family can properly lay him to rest.

Mohbad, also known as “Imole,” was a rising star in Nigeria’s music scene. Known for hits like “Peace,” “Ko Por Ke (KPK),” and “Sabi,” he left Marlian Records in 2022 to establish his own label, Imolenization. He is survived by his wife, Wunmi, and their son.

Mohbad’s legacy lives on in his music, but his death remains a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by young artists navigating the complex world of the Nigerian music industry. 9am news Nigeria will continue to follow the developments in the case.
