Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have staged protests at the PDP State Secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

According to 9am News Nigeria, a massive presence of security officers was noted at the protest site, as demonstrators carried placards with messages opposing the election and demanding compliance with court judgments. The protest caused significant disruption to traffic as security officers struggled to manage the large crowd.

One banner displayed during the protest read: “TAI people say no to lawlessness. Say no to LGA election. RSIEC must obey court judgment. SIM must obey court judgement.”

This demonstration comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to release the 2023 Voter Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). The delay follows a court judgment from Abuja, barring INEC from releasing the register ahead of the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.
