President Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned to Abuja in the early hours of Thursday after concluding a series of high-profile diplomatic engagements in Japan and Brazil.

According to a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the presidential jet departed from Brasília International Airport Air Force Base at 12:57 pm local time on Wednesday and touched down in Nigeria Thursday morning.

Tinubu had travelled to Japan for the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), held in Yokohama from August 20. During the summit, he attended the opening ceremony and plenary session, engaged in bilateral meetings with global leaders, and interacted with members of the Nigerian community in Japan.

Following his engagements in Japan, the President made a stopover in Los Angeles before proceeding to Brasília, Brazil. There, Tinubu met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other top officials in a bid to deepen bilateral ties.

The two leaders held private discussions and jointly witnessed the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). The agreements covered strategic areas including aviation, foreign affairs, science and technology, and agriculture—sectors central to Nigeria’s development and economic growth agenda.

On arrival in Abuja, President Tinubu was received by dignitaries and senior government officials, marking the end of a week-long diplomatic mission aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s global partnerships and securing opportunities for growth.

This latest round of international engagements underscores the administration’s commitment to expanding Nigeria’s diplomatic reach while securing practical benefits for the economy.
