Early Sunday Morning, Nigerian Police Force operatives reportedly opened fire and used tear gas to violently disperse demonstrators gathered at the #EndSARS bus stop (formerly known as the Lekki Tollgate) in Lagos State. The protesters had assembled to honour the memory of those who lost their lives during the #EndSARS protests against police brutality in October 2020.
Eyewitnesses described how the peaceful march was disrupted when police officers began shooting into the air and releasing tear gas to break up the gathering. The demonstration quickly turned chaotic, with several attendees fleeing for safety.
At least two individuals were reportedly arrested during the incident, though their identities have not been made public. A source who spoke to 9am News Nigeria confirmed the arrests. However, the Nigerian Police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the use of force or the arrests made during the memorial procession.
The #EndSARS bus stop holds significant symbolic importance, as it was the location of the infamous October 20, 2020 Lekki Tollgate shooting, where Nigerian security forces allegedly opened fire on unarmed protesters. The site has since become a focal point for memorials and demonstrations marking the anniversary of the #EndSARS protests.
