Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party (LP), despite joining forces with opposition figures under the umbrella of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking in Abuja at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre during the unveiling of the coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obi explained that his involvement in the alliance is driven by a vision to deliver better governance to Nigerians and prevent Tinubu’s second term.

“The coalition just adopted ADC for 2027. We are working together for the sake of Nigeria. Today, I’m a member of the Labour Party, but we’ve agreed to collaborate as a coalition for the 2027 election,” Obi said.

He stressed that there is no anti-party activity involved, dismissing rumours that he might abandon the Labour Party. “There’s no anti-party in this. We’re not leaving where we are,” Obi declared, according to the 9am News report.

Obi, who reiterated his intention to contest for president in 2027, ruled out claims that he has been pencilled down as Atiku’s running mate, saying: “Nobody has ever discussed that with me. I know I’m going to contest for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified.”

The former governor, popular among youths for his straightforward style, stated that if elected, he would serve only one term of four years. “A lot can be achieved within four years. I don’t need a day more,” he said, adding that Nigerians deserve 100 per cent sacrifice and service from their leaders.

He criticized the Tinubu administration’s response to national tragedies, citing an incident last December when 18 pupils died in a stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State. “If I were president, I would have gone to Ibadan to console the parents. The president travelled for Christmas instead. I won’t do that,” Obi said.

Obi also addressed old claims about ties to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, clarifying that he never worked for Abacha but only served on a port decongestion committee as a businessman when port closures crippled businesses.

He emphasized that the coalition is about harnessing experience while driving genuine change: “One of the coalition’s goals is to lawfully change the Tinubu-led government because we have seen incompetence, failure, and lack of capacity. We must do this for the sake of our children.”

Obi’s stand signals more realignments in Nigeria’s political space as the 2027 election draws closer, with the Labour Party and ADC coalition aiming to reshape the opposition’s strategy in the coming years.
