Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary, marking a significant reconciliation step involving key party figures and factions.
This announcement was made by the PDP Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, June 26, 2025.
Anyanwu, a known ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, returns to the National Working Committee (NWC) after months of intra-party tension and conflicting loyalties that shaped recent party dynamics.
Speaking alongside prominent party stakeholders including Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other senior figures, Damagum described the reinstatement as “a difficult decision,” but emphasized that it had the backing of a broad consensus within the party’s leadership.
“Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary, that is why I said it was a critical decision. Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice, so what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus,” Damagum stated.
The PDP also announced the cancellation of its much-anticipated 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, initially scheduled for June 30, 2025. In its place, an expanded Caucus meeting will be held to deliberate on further structural issues and internal decisions.
The announcement comes just a day after Damagum led a high-level PDP delegation to a closed-door meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) leadership, including Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and other National Commissioners.
The party sought clarification on INEC’s rejection of its notice for the NEC meeting, citing legal concerns over party processes and leadership notifications.
Present at the meeting were several PDP governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) along with Senate Minority Leader Abba Morro, former VP candidate Senator Ben Obi, and others, indicating a broad coalition of party interests.
Anyanwu’s return may signal a softening of internal hostilities between factions loyal to Nyesom Wike and other senior PDP figures. The former Imo governorship candidate had faced challenges to his position after falling out with certain national leaders and amid Wike’s controversial alignment with the ruling party on some issues.
With key national figures now appearing more united at least publicly the PDP is likely seeking to rebuild internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
