PDP Governors Reaffirm Commitment to November National Convention Despite Wike’s Opposition

PDP governors reaffirm commitment to November 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, back Damagum-led leadership, reject Wike’s position,
PDP National Convention 2025

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared their firm commitment to the party’s elective National Convention scheduled for November 15th and 16th, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The resolution came after their meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State capital, on Saturday, amid growing controversy following comments credited to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Wike had insisted he was not aware of the planned convention and dismissed the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting where the decision was taken. He also maintained that there would be no peace in the PDP unless the South-South Congress conducted by his allies, which produced Dan Orbih and was rejected by the National Working Committee (NWC), is recognized.

PDP Governors Stand with Damagum

The PDP governors, however, threw their weight behind the Ambassador Umar Damagum-led leadership of the party and reaffirmed their support for the resolutions of the 101st NEC meeting held in July 2025.

Reading the communiqué to journalists, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, said:

“The Forum reaffirms its full commitment to the resolutions of the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of July 2025 regarding the November 15 National Convention. It urges members to resist all attempts to derail the convention by anti-party forces; but to see the PDP as the only democratic institution and viable alternative for restoring Nigeria along the path of good governance and national development.”

Loyalty and Resilience

The governors praised PDP members and supporters for their steadfastness “in the face of serious intimidation and untold anti-democratic actions of the APC-led Federal Government in the last by-election.”

They commended party leaders for overcoming orchestrated defections, stressing that such distractions cannot diminish the PDP’s grassroots appeal or the growing public demand for affordable living and improved security under PDP-led administrations.

The Forum further urged Nigerians to stand firm with the PDP’s vision and principles, describing the ruling APC as “a political party with no agenda, no vision and doomed to face inevitable rejection by the masses.”

Concerns on Elections and Insecurity

On the August 9 by-election, PDP governors condemned what they described as “the over-militarization of the polls, widespread irregularities, vote buying and violence.” They called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and protect their votes in future elections.

Addressing the worsening insecurity in the country, the Forum commended the Zamfara State Government’s efforts in reducing banditry but condemned “the continued monstrous killings in Katsina, Plateau, Niger, Benue and other parts of the country.”

The governors urged the Federal Government to show greater responsiveness in protecting lives and property.
