Over 956 Nigerians Evacuated from Libya in Early 2025 – NIDCOM

NIDCOM Chair, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirms the evacuation of 956 Nigerians from Libya in early 2025, warning against irregular migration.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has revealed that over 956 Nigerians were evacuated from Libya in the first quarter of 2025, thanks to the efforts of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMI).

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NIDCOM’s Chairman/CEO, disclosed that the returnees comprised 683 females, 132 males, 87 children, and 54 infants, all brought home in six tranches between January and March 2025.

The evacuation flights were as follows:

  • January 28 – 152 returnees
  • February 11, 19, and 25 – 145, 180, and 159 returnees respectively
  • March 4 and 18 – 144 and 176 returnees respectively

The latest evacuations add to the over 15,000 Nigerians repatriated from Libya in recent years by the Federal Government and IOM.

Dabiri-Erewa once again cautioned Nigerians against using Libya as a migration route to Europe, citing its unstable political climate and numerous dangers. Despite repeated warnings, some migrants continue to return to Libya or attempt more perilous routes in pursuit of a better life.

She reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the dignity and rights of Nigerians at home and abroad, regardless of their socio-economic, ethnic, or religious backgrounds.

Calling for greater awareness, Dabiri-Erewa urged government agencies, NGOs, the media, and other stakeholders to collaborate in educating Nigerians about the risks of irregular migration and the importance of using legal pathways for international travel.
